Elm trees (genus Ulmus)

6 Key Facts About Elm Trees:

• Species & Distribution: There are approximately 35 species of elm found across the Northern Hemisphere, including the American elm, English elm, and Wych elm.

• Disease Impact: Dutch Elm Disease (DED), a fungus carried by bark beetles, has killed millions of trees, particularly in North America and Europe.

• Physical Features: They typically grow 50 to 100+ feet tall. Leaves are serrated, rough, and asymmetrical at the base. Flowers are small, red-purple, and appear in early spring before leaves.

• Wood Uses: Elm wood is durable, interlocking (resistant to splitting), and water-resistant, historically used for ship keels, coffin making, chair seats, and wagon wheels.

• Historical & Ecological Significance: They are often planted as, or were formerly, premier street trees. The leaves are critical for insects like the white-letter hairstreak butterfly.

• Adaptability: They are resilient and can grow in various soils, with Asian species often showing higher resistance to DED.
