Storyline 

The film cuts between two distinct eras, contrasting the rise of the father with the moral collapse of the son: 

• The 1958–1960 Timeline (Michael's Reign): Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) rules as the new Don, attempting to legitimize the family business by moving operations to Nevada and expanding into Las Vegas and Havana. Plagued by paranoia, betrayal from his brother Fredo, an attack on his life, and a Senate investigation into organized crime, Michael grows increasingly isolated and ruthless. 

• The 1901–1917 Timeline (Vito's Origins): Flashbacks follow nine-year-old Vito Andolini fleeing Sicily after the local mafia murders his family. Arriving in New York's Little Italy, the young Vito (played by Robert De Niro) grows up, builds a quiet reputation for honor and grit, avenges his family by killing a local Black Hand extortionist, and lays the groundwork for the Corleone empire.
